What we fix

Most "dead" laptops are one failed component, not a write-off.

Every make, including MacBook

We repair all makes of laptop: Apple MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Microsoft Surface, Samsung and Razer, from everyday notebooks to gaming laptops. Board-level repair works on components, not logos, so if your make is not in that list, ask anyway.

What is your laptop doing?

The same symptom can have a cheap cause or an expensive one. This is what each usually turns out to be, and where to read more.

  • It will not turn on at allMost often the charger, the charging port, or one failed part in the power circuit on the motherboard, not the whole board. Start with the checks in our motherboard repair guide.
  • It will not charge, or only at an angleA worn socket, cracked solder joints behind it, or the charging chip. USB-C laptops can also fail to agree a charging voltage with the charger. See laptop not charging.
  • Something was spilled on itSwitch it off, unplug it and leave it off. Corrosion carries on while the battery is connected, so the sooner it is opened and cleaned the better. See laptop liquid damage.
  • It turns on but the screen stays blackThe panel, its cable, the backlight circuit, or a fault on the board that stops it starting up. A torch held against the screen, or an external monitor, tells them apart. See our screen guide.
  • It shuts down by itself or runs very hotBlocked cooling is the simple cause. A power fault on the board that only shows under load is the other, and it needs measuring rather than guessing.
  • The screen is cracked, flickering or linedUsually the panel or the display cable. We confirm the exact panel for your model before ordering a part.

Told it needs a new motherboard?

"The motherboard has gone, it is not worth fixing" is often what you hear when a repairer swaps parts but does not repair boards. A replacement board is usually the most expensive way to fix a laptop, and for older models it can be hard to find at all.

We work the other way round. We measure the power rails and test the components on your board to find the part that actually failed, then replace that part. If you have already been quoted for a new motherboard, or told the laptop is a write-off, send us the model and what you were told. You get a quote before any major work starts.

Common questions

Which laptop brands do you repair?

All of them. Apple MacBook, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Microsoft Surface, Samsung, Razer and others, including gaming laptops. Tell us the make and exact model when you ask for a quote.

Do you repair MacBooks?

Yes. We repair MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, Intel and Apple silicon models, at component level. CQ Electronics is an independent repairer, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

My laptop won't turn on — is it worth repairing?

Usually, yes. A laptop that won't power on is very often a single failed component on the motherboard — a charging IC or power circuit — rather than the whole board. Board-level diagnosis finds the actual fault before we recommend a repair.

Do you replace laptop motherboards or repair them?

We diagnose at component level first. A full motherboard swap is usually the most expensive option and doesn't tell you what actually failed, so we repair the specific failed component wherever the board allows it.

Can you fix a cracked or flickering laptop screen?

Yes, including cracked panels, dead pixels, backlight failure and flickering caused by a damaged display cable. We confirm the correct panel specification for your model before ordering parts.

My laptop only charges when I hold the plug at an angle. Can that be fixed?

Yes. That is nearly always the charging socket or the solder joints that hold it to the board. We check the power input first, replace the socket and repair any damaged contacts on the board. Stop wedging the plug in place in the meantime: a loose connection that arcs can damage the board behind it.

What should I do if I spill liquid on my laptop?

Unplug the charger, hold the power button until it switches off, stand it upside down like a tent so the liquid drains out, and leave it off. Do not switch it on to test it and do not charge it. Then contact us, because corrosion carries on while the battery is still connected.

Can I post my laptop to you from outside Brisbane?

Yes, we accept postal repairs Australia-wide for eligible electronics. Contact us first with the make, model and fault so we can confirm it is suitable.

Do I need to book before I bring my laptop in?

Yes, drop-off is by arrangement. Send a repair request or call 0451 008 959 first so we know what is coming and can tell you whether it is a job for us.

What do you need to know to give me a quote?

The make and exact model, a clear description of the fault, when it started, anything already tried or replaced, and photos if there is visible damage.

Can you replace a laptop battery or keyboard?

Yes, for every make. We match the part to your exact model, fit it and test it. If the battery is swollen, stop charging the laptop and bring it in as it is.

Can you get my files off a laptop that will not turn on?

In most cases, yes. If the drive can be removed it is read in another computer. If the storage is soldered to the board, as on most recent MacBooks, the board has to be repaired to reach the files. Nobody can promise a result before looking, so we start with an assessment.

My laptop is slow. Is it worth upgrading?

Often. Replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD is the biggest single improvement, and more memory helps if it runs out with a few programs open. Some thin laptops and recent MacBooks have both soldered in, so we check your exact model first.

Will you beat a cheaper quote from another Brisbane repairer?

Yes. Every laptop repair booked with CQ Electronics already includes an automatic 5% discount off the quoted price. If you find a genuine lower price for the same repair elsewhere, we will beat it by 5%. The price beat can't be combined with the 5% off, so you get one or the other. Tell us about the other price when you request a quote.
